Agnes Carlsen Widow
of seafarer Capt. Carlsen dies
By REVA McEACHERN
|
Woodbridge, New Jersey- Agnes Carlsen,
widow of Capt. Henrik Kurt Carlsen - a seafarer who became an
icon for his bravery - died Thursday in Rochester Hills, Mich.
She was 94. Capt. Carlsen caused a sensation in 1951 - and was
highly honoured thereafter - when he elected to stay with the
freighter under his command while it foundered in heavy seas
off the coast of England.
Cont: from news page:- Agnes Carlsen was born
in Blavand, Denmark, on Feb. 19, 1911. She was married to Carlsen
for 51 years before he died in October 1989. They were residents
of Woodbridge for 47 1/2 years. Agnes moved to Michigan in 1992.

She and her husband were active in their community for many
years. Agnes was a member of the Woodbridge Garden Club and
won many ribbons for flower arranging. She also volunteered
at the Iselin Garden for the Blind. "She was a full-time
mom and a homemaker," said her eldest daughter, Sonia Carlsen
Fedak, "and as far as I'm concerned, the best mother in
the world. She was the heroine behind the hero. If she hadn't
said it was OK for him to go to sea, he couldn't have done what
he did so well.” Kurt Carlsen is remembered for staying
with his ship, the Flying Enterprise, for 13 days after its
10 passengers had safely evacuated the vessel in the midst of
a severe storm. Finally, on Jan. 9, 1952, after Carlsen had
left the ship, the Flying Enterprise went under.” He followed
the law of the sea to the letter," said his daughter. Carlsen
Park in Sewaren is dedicated to his memory. "He was a man
that we need for today. We need a real live hero who just did
his job because it had to be done. It was a beautiful legacy
that he left us of integrity and commitment," said Carlsen
Fedak. Agnes and Kurt Carlsen were the beloved parents of Sonia
Carlsen Fedak of Rochester Hills, Mich., and Karen Mueller of
Plymouth, Mich. Also surviving are loving grandchildren, Kim
(Fedak) Brunstad of Avon, Conn., Sherie (Fedak) MacGregor of
Cave Creek, Ariz., Cindy (Mueller) Hall of Charlotte, N.C.;
and great-grandchildren, Eric, Robert and Alexandra Brunstad,
Caitlin and Megan MacGregor, and Abigail, Margaret and Thomas
Hall. The family of Agnes Carlsen is planning a Celebration
of Life in July when the entire family can be together. Instead
of flowers, donations may be sent to Cranbrook Hospice, 281
Enterprise Court, Suite 300, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302.
