With US destroyers standing by the famous listing ship is carefully monitored.

When the ship finally sank dozens of surrounding vessels blasted their whistles in praise.

For almost two weeks the ship took a severe list to port although refused to sink.

Many famous pictures of the sinking ship appeared in newspapers and TV shows around the world.

As aircraft flew overhead the tug Turmoil made all efforts to tow the ship to safety.

Today the ship rests at 280ft deep on her port side in 1952 she spent 11 days listing heavily to port.
As triumphant as Carlsen may have appeared he new he had lost the battle to save his ship.
