GERMAN GUN BOAT M8

NEWS UPDATE on this wrecksite

This in from Polish diver Sebastian Popek www.balticwrecks.com
Leigh After much research Now we are in 100% sure that this wreck was german hilfsminnensuchboot Vs304 (ex-Munin). Sunken 18.3.1945 in collision.

During the 2003 expedition to the wreck of the Wilhelm Gustloff the American and English divers inspected a warship of Kriegsmarine origin in the Bay of Danzig. A short distance from the harbor of Hel in 40m of water this wreck was until now unidentified by local Polish divers however research carried out by the British divers suggests this is almost certainly that of the German Gunboat M85. During WWII the Kriegsmarine reported a single loss of their shipping inside the Bay of Danzig Poland, today local dive charters have located just one German warship in the Bay and research indicates this is infact the M85. This vessel was actually a mine sweeper that fell victim to a Polish Mine laid by the polish sub „Zbik“. 24 dead, 47 survivors on 1st October 1939. Records show that 10 wounded soldiers brought ashore from the M85.

During their stay in Poland in May 2003 the team that surveyed and photographed the 'Wilhelm Gustloff' spent a single dive photographing the 'at the time Unknown German warship'. World renown shipwreck photographers Leigh Bishop of the UK & Brad Sheard of the US are pleased to share their results with readers of DeepImage.

Above; Looking up at the M85 from a slit mud seabed the bridge section of the wreck is silhouetted by the
ambient light background. The wreck sits upright on the bottom although the mud and silt has built
up against the lower hull sections as can be seen in this image by Brad Sheard.

can still be seen housed in its hawser. A light covering of mussels and marine growth
covers the bow foredeck. © Leigh Bishop 2003
